Description

Two pieces in this lot. 1) Bottom: 'Echo and Narcissus' by John William Waterhouse , an early 20th-century artwork depicting classical figures in a natural setting, mounted on a board. This piece captures the evocative narrative and aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelite style. The original painting was completed in 1903. 2) Top: 'October' by James Tissot (1836-1902). Original oil on canvas was painted 1877 and currently hangs at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Key Details: * Origin/Era: Early 20th Century * Material: Print on board * Style: Pre-Raphaelite, Symbolist * Dimensions: Approximately 70 cm wide x 50 cm high Condition: Significant wear and scuffing are present on the edges and corners of the board, accompanied by some visible loss of the printed layer in these areas. Interesting facts: * John William Waterhouse was a prominent English painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, known for his romantic portrayals of women from classical mythology, literature, and Arthurian legend. * 'Echo and Narcissus' is one of his most celebrated works, visually interpreting Ovid's tragic myth of the nymph Echo's unrequited love for the vain youth Narcissus. * The woman depicted in James Tissot's monumental painting October is Kathleen Newton, an Irish divorcee who became the artist's greatest muse, primary model, and devoted romantic companion. Newton lived with Tissot in London during a time when their relationship flouted strict Victorian social conventions. Ooo-Lala! * Tissot's elongated, narrow vertical format of the painting was directly inspired by Japanese hanging scrolls known as kakemonos, reflecting the era's fascination with Asian art. Use: A decorative art piece suitable for collectors of classical reproductions or those who appreciate the aesthetic of Pre-Raphaelite art in a home or office setting.
