Estimate: $800 - $1,200 AUD. Starting bid: $400 AUD.
Description
A COMPREHENSIVE VICTORIAN COLLECTOR’S FOLIO OF ENGRAVINGS AFTER THE OLD MASTERS Mid-to-Late 19th Century Compilation DESCRIPTION A substantial and meticulously curated 19th-century collector’s album, comprising 83 tipped-in reproductive engravings after masterpieces of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods. The collection demonstrates a sophisticated 19th-century antiquarian taste, heavily leaning toward the Italian Renaissance (Raphael, Titian, Correggio), the Roman Baroque (Carracci, Reni, Guercino), and the Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish landscape and historical painting (Rubens, Rembrandt, Cuyp). Notably, the folio includes a complete sequence of William Hogarth’s Marriage A-la-Mode (Plates 1–6) and a sweeping 11-plate suite of classical landscapes and seaports after Claude Lorrain, alongside evocative dramatic landscapes by Gaspar Poussin. BINDING Large quarto/folio. Half-bound in dark green morocco over matching cloth boards. The spine is divided into six compartments by five raised bands, with five of the compartments featuring rich, gilt-tooled floral centerpieces and ornate corner volutes. Gilt ruling to the board edges. The interior is finished with vibrant Spanish combed marbled endpapers in shades of blue, yellow, and green. Condition Report
Binding: Displays wear commensurate with age and handling. Scuffing and rubbing to the leather extremities, particularly at the joints, head, and tail of the spine. The cloth boards show scattered minor staining and wear. The corners are bumped. The hinges remain sound and the binding is secure, although slightly loose. Interior/Plates: The engravings have been uniformly trimmed to the image or plate mark and tipped directly onto heavy Victorian album leaves. The impressions range from good to excellent. Occasional light to moderate foxing, age-toning, and minor offsetting are present across the album leaves, typical of 19th-century paper stock, though the primary image areas remain largely clean and highly legible.
