Description

Charles Dickens 14 Illustrated Volumes, Facsimile Author's Favourite Edition by Charles Dickens This enhanced listing description incorporates the historical details of your 1926 Waverley set, emphasizing its prestige as Charles Dickens' preferred edition. The Works of Charles Dickens: The Author's Favourite Edition. A Complete 15-Volume Set (Near-Complete in 14 Volumes) 1926 Waverley Facsimile. Historical Significance: This collection is the celebrated "Author's Favourite Edition," published by the Waverley Book Company. It is a faithful facsimile in every detail of text and illustration (excepting the title pages) of the final edition published during Charles Dickens' lifetime—a version he personally described as the "Best Edition of my Books". While the original series comprised 30 individual volumes, this definitive set contains the complete works within 15 volumes by printing two volumes as one. Note though, one volume is missing and is only being sold as 14 volumes. The uniform style of binding is meticulously copied from the original 19th-century issues. Bound in rich burgundy/red cloth, each board features deep blind-embossed floral and Greek frieze decorations. The spines are finished with vibrant gilt-embossed lettering and decorative flourishes. Generously illustrated throughout with many B&W full-page plates, including illustrated title pages and frontispieces by legendary artists such as George Cruikshank and H.K. Browne ("Phiz"). This near-complete set features nineteen major titles: The Pickwick Papers, Sketches by Boz & Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, Barnaby Rudge & Hard Times, The Old Curiosity Shop & Reprinted Pieces, Christmas Books, Pictures from Italy & American Notes, Martin Chuzzlewit, Dombey and Son, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Little Dorrit, A Tale of Two Cities & Great Expectations, The Uncommercial Traveller & A Child's History of England, Christmas Stories & The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
